How did Quebec's Steamed Day come about?
May 6th isn't an official date on the calendar, but it's slowly starting to look like one. Every year, all over Quebec, more and more people are taking it as a good excuse to get together and eat steamed vegetables, without making things too complicated.

The idea originated in 2023 when Mathieu Dufour, also known as Math Duff, launched the concept somewhat jokingly. The connection was simple: “May 6th,” “steamed.” An easy pun, but catchy enough to quickly get people on board. Even though the proposal to make the day official was never adopted, it didn't really slow the momentum. People talked about it on social media, others decided to participate in their own way, often without any particular organization. It wasn't structured, but it worked nonetheless, precisely because it remained simple and accessible.

In 2024, the enthusiasm became more visible. Businesses, cafeterias, CEGEPs (pre-university colleges), and even some public figures began to get involved, each in their own way. There were impromptu gatherings, promotions in some stores, and above all, many people who simply took the time to celebrate the day, without any pressure. The atmosphere was lighthearted, often humorous, but always centered on the same principle: sharing a moment around a local classic.
JQDS 2025
In 2025, we felt another step forward. More visibility, more participation, and above all, more initiatives everywhere. It was no longer just something we saw online, but an event that was starting to truly take hold. Companies began preparing in advance, events were organized, and the day took on a more tangible dimension, while still retaining its simplicity and accessibility. We clearly felt it was becoming a much-anticipated event.
It continues in 2026!
And for 2026, it continues in the same direction, but with even more structure. An official website is now in place to bring together businesses, events, and everything happening on May 6th. More and more people are getting involved, both businesses and the public, suggesting that the day could become a true highlight of spring in Quebec.
What distinguishes Quebec Steamed Day is precisely this lack of rigid structure. There's no official way to participate, no rules to follow. Whether in a backyard, around a table with friends, or directly at a diner counter, everyone can make the day their own.
Over time, it's starting to resemble a tradition that develops organically. Not because it's imposed, but because the world finds something simple and unifying in it. And that's probably why it continues to grow in popularity year after year.
Ultimately, it's a fairly simple idea. A play on words, an easy-to-remember date, and a classic that everyone already knows. But that's precisely what makes May 6th work so well.
